The Killing Fields
The Khmer Rouge regime arrested and eventually executed those suspected of connections with the former or foreign governments, as well as professionals and intellectuals. Also arrested were members of ethnic minorities including ethnic Vietnamese, Thai, Chinese and Cham.
The slippery slope of a “political crime” began with a warning from Angkar. People receiving more than two warnings were sent for “re-education”, which meant near-certain death.
People were often encouraged to confess any “pre-revolutionary lifestyles and crimes”. Those who simply sold items at a market, or had any contact with foreigners were targeted. Victims were told that Angkar would “forgive them” but the reality was detention at prisons like Tuol Sleng where they were routinely tortured. Those surviving the torture were almost always taken to be executed in the “killing fields”.
In order to save ammunition, the executions were often carried out using blunt objects or sharpened sticks. In some cases the children and infants were killed by having their heads smashed on the trunks of large trees. Dozens of mass graves are visible with bones, teeth and clothing surfacing during heavy rainfalls.
The seemingly innocuous ground bears silent witness to the horrors of the history there.
We remember lest we forget.

When to come?
Anytime is a good time to visit Cambodia but most people prefer to visit during the dry season, from November to April, with the “cool season” of November to February being particularly pleasant. However, prices tend to be higher around this busy period.
What to bring?
Pack lightweight, breathable clothing, comfortable shoes, Insect repellent and sunscreen. For day tours it is a good idea to wear light clothes that cover your skin, they will keep you cool and protect you from the sun.
